Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween everyone! Try to enjoy tha best day of tha year today :)

Almost half way there :(

Alright bw, it's almost halfway through October (smdh), but I'm always a glass is half full kind of person (lol).

I have some movies earmarked to review the next 18 days (some way older classics, and some of the new 2013 ones I haven't schwangled yet), but didn't know if tha fans had any (non-bad) suggestions.

Also I usually do some sort of Halloween theme countdown each year (2012 was horror villains, 2011 was stars before they were famous, 2010 was just awesome). Let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

Halloweenjitsu in tha news!!

Well "big news"for buff.

One of halloweenjitu's biggest fans has (sort of) recognized tha blog. Obvi, Halloweenjitsu has gotten some press in tha past, but never from someone as OTC as Buff's idol from the hit TV show Buckwild.****

Hope everyone can live with that all that jealousy tonight lol.

Top 10 Horror Villains

Wgbw, I've decided the countdown for this year will be the top 10 horror villains of all time.

I can't provide any objective way that I'm really going to rank them but I should provide a few disclaimers:

1) They probably won't be ranked solely based on cultural impact. Obvi that will determine their ranking but the countdown won't focus on it entirely.

2) As a follow up to that, you can imagine that the characters won't be ranked based on how good they were on rotten tomatoes so don't get your hopes up Jon. 

3) How scary they were to little (or older) Buffalo will probably be a pretty big factor. Some of these characters have scared me for the better part of my youth so you can count on them making the countdown.

Anywho, I'll start off with #10 later tonight, I love you all

Top 10 Countdown 2012

WGBW, still have a movie review coming for later tonight. But just thought I'd let you all know that I've narrowed down the top 10 countdown lists this year to two choices.

Either

1) The top 10 decades of scary movies (care of @buns0n).

or

2) Buff's top 10 best Halloweens (care of @thewholemilk).

Both of these are solid choices and I'm down for either. The countdown has to start the 22nd, and I'll have to put in some thought on either of the lists. I know some of the jitsu fans who don't know me personally will probably get confused by the second countdown, but I also know those of you who tune in on the reg are already probably bored of my scary movie reviews.

Happy October!

Wgbw, happy October. Today is the second greatest day of the year and I'm excited \o/

I've got a movie post for later tonight (obvi it's October) but wanted to let all the fans know what direction I'll be moving in this year.

There's a bunch of classic horror movies that I'm gonna get on here, as well as a bunch of the horror cult classics (that I never seem to enjoy lol) along with some sequels that I've been neglecting.

@warnerben had the tight idea of tuning back into some sort of countdown. Those always go over well but I need to brainstorm for an idea of what to countdown. I thought about doing my top 10 favorite horror movies but I'm afraid the blog may have already given that away.

The one change I think I'll be making from years past is that I'm going to re-review some of the more solid Halloween movies that I tune into year round. Not that I didn't review them great the first time around, but looking back on the early days of the blog I'm sure I can make these posts a lot better. This will happen towards the latter part of October.

As always, if the fans have any suggestions for something for me to review (outside of reviewing the Dirty Projectors concert lol) I'm all on board.

Sleeping with the tv off - a case study

 Wgbw, I know I just promised to try and stay away from the self-reflective posts, but this is sort of related since I often fall asleep to scary movies so bear with me.

I've chronicled my journey with sleeping with the tv on and off and thought I'd keep you posted about it. 

9/17/12: I've determined I might have to start sleeping with the tv off. 

To those of you know me, this is unbelievable. For years I have slept with the TV on. The whole reason the couchbread is so popular is because of the gigantic TV in front of it.  It used to be a deal breaker with girls. It was never anything personal, but if you couldn't sleep with the tv on I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. Even the whole 'let's put the sleep timer' thing never made much sense to me.

I mostly trace this back to my childhood. I grew up sleeping with the tv on. Whenever I went to stay at someone's house I could never sleep. Now, being 26 years old, I still can't sleep with the tv off when I'm not in my own bread.

Lately though it's been giving me problems. For the last 4 months I've been waking up every 3-4 hours, checking the clock, and then immediately falling back asleep. Part of the reason I can fall back asleep so easily is that I've seen every episode of the hit tv show Friends 2539 times so when I wake up and it's on the TV I don't tune in too much. I didn't read too much into at first, but then it was a nightly ritual. After doing some research I found out that it can screw with your blood pressure, your ability to make sound life choices, and can cause over the top nightmares. Now I've never believed in the whole 'sleeping with the tv on leads to depression' argument because I'm generally happier when I wake up and the TV is on and more depressed when I realized someone has shut it off.  But the rest of this kind of spooked me. I've had high blood pressure off and on, make poor decisions (well rarely), and have creepy nightmares on the reg.

After realizing that I'm probably the only person I know who has (or even wants) to sleep with the TV on, I've decided I'm going to start shutting it off when I get drowsy. We'll see how this goes.

9/24/12: What a dumb idea that was

Well, after a day or two of that experiment, I've determined that I'm never shutting off the TV again. Ever.

After an hour of being restless I'd eventually fall asleep but then wake up every 3 hours. And when I woke up I'd just lay there confused, wondering why the TV was off.  "Did the power go out? Did Bricker sneak in here to play a cruel prank on me? Am I not at the Cone?"

I've also figured out that there could be other culprits. My mattress pad is old, my beds not pushed up against the wall anymore, and it's no longer summer (story for another post).

Now of course I'll have to figure out the other problems associated with sleeping with the TV on at a later date (i.e. settling down with someone, our energy bill, etc.), but for now I think I'll keep tuning in.

In the midst of studying for tha bar, me and Alan have had a lot of time on our hands. Unfortunately, Alan's taste in movies is subpar and we can never agree on a movie to watch. To break this, we've agreed to review only movies that Roger Ebert deems as Great Movies.

Alan and I are going to trade off picking the movies, and will hopefully not watch too much stupid stuff.

The Best of the (Hypothetical) Oscars

Wgbw, sorry for the delays. Been busy lately lol.

Every year I think the OSCARS are out to lunch about what actually should have gone down. There's way too many awards to go through with my limited attention span, but here are some historical injustices committed by the academy award people.

1) Best Actor in 2004

Who should've gotten it: Will Smith in the hit movie Bad Boys 2. Need I say more? Not only is this movie super tight, but Will Smith just makes it rain.

Who actually got it: Sean Penn in Mystic River. I've actually never seen this movie, nor do I care to, but I can't imagine Sean Penn was better than Will Smith. The last real tight thing Sean Penn was in was the few Friends eps where he's Ursela's fiance, but even that wasn't close to anything Will Smithesque.

Best Costume Design in 2003

Who should've gotten it: 8 Mile. I hate all the goofy artsy/fartsy stuff in movies, but this one was (obvi) well done. At the end of the movie he's the only one wearing white which highlights his outside appearance to the community. And he keeps repping the hoodie which I'm a big fan of lol.

Who actually got it: one of the jitsu lord of the rings movies. I don't understand why this movie won, I mean, the whole movie is a giant costume. Everyone had fake ears and stuff and generally looked ridiculous. I guess thats more of a problem with the category as a whole, I don't know why they have to have fashion awards for movies smh.

Best animated short file in 1997

Who should've gotten it: Beavis and Butthead Do America. I don't think there's any debate here. This is obviously the greatest animated movie ever.

Who actually got it: Geri's Game. I had never even heard of this movie. It seems like the AA are just trying to fill up nominees instead of actually seeing if the movie was good or not. I really think it'd be okay for them to just be honest and admit that no movie should have even been nominated besides B&B.

Some other random pet peeves. I don't get a whole bunch of these awards.

Best film editing. How would they even know how good a film was edited? Did the watch all the uncut footage and determine that these ones were edited the best? Do they watch the deleted scenes and determine that only the best scenes were included? It doesn't make any sense.

Best score. This is the academy awards not the grammys lol.

Best original screenplay. Is this just who wrote the best movie? I don't really get it.

I won't be tuning in tonight lol.

Some Thoughts On the Record

Earlier I was explaining to Alan about how I have a much better movie taste than he does. Alan and I talk about this weekly so I thought I'd just go on the record about some of my thoughts about certain movies that obviously need to be made public.



The following statements will never change:

1) Empire Records is the worst movie of all time. I'd put a link to a review that I've done to it here, but I haven't reviewed it because it's that bad. It's worse than Adaptation, Annie Hall, and Lord of the Rings all put together. It's so bad I can't even begin to describe it. I mean, the people just sit in this stupid records store all night. It's so boring it's unbelievable.

2) Sorority Row is still obvi a top 5 movie of all time. It's one of the few movies that I can fall asleep to on repeat because it never gets old.

3) 8 Mile is the sickest movie of all time obvi.

4) For all my love of RomCom movies, I really don't like feel good/disney/animated/christmas movies. It would take a Christmas miracle for this to change. No matter how many of these I sit through they still blow.

Top 10 Movie Lines: Explanations for Rankings

Just a few thoughts and how I'll probably be ranking these:

a) Historical significance- for me more so than anything. A bunch of these lines have made it into my vocabulary over the years and obvi those will be highly ranked.

b) I'll try to limit the Bad Boys/8 Mile lines that I've rehashed on the blog so many times.

c) I don't care about actually famous lines. The 'here's looking at you kid/you can't handle the truth' stuff is fine and all but I'm not going to read up on what Roger Ebert thinks is good.

d) I've realized that there's more than 10 actually good quotes- it'll be lucky if any of your favorites make the list.

e) TV appearances possible but not likely- they might just make another countdown- I'm not quite sure yet.

Top 10 Before They Were Famous

Wasn't anything too wild in the recommendations for the top 10. After mulling it over, we're gonna count down the top 10 movie stars who made their early debut in a horror movie. Now, before Jon goes and makes some polisci graph about why this countdown is inaccurate I should preface it with a few reservations.

1) I'll generally only include them if I've reviewed the movie before. I don't want to trace every famous movie star to some bad movie they did once that no one's ever heard of.

2) I won't include people who are now famous for some jitsu show. A few google searches produced some famous people from Lost or ER or some show I couldn't care less about.

3) It might not be their actual debut. I tried to weed out people whose 10th movie ended up being some horror movie, but generally it will be super early in their career.

Top 10 Brainstorming

A dedicated reader (@warnerben) thought a top 10 countdown might be in order. I agree with the idea and it's always tight to do (see evidence here), but I'm having a hard time thinking about a top 10 list that wouldn't reinvent the wheel too much on here.

Top 10 lines from 8 mile?
Top 10 Jon jokes?

New blog format/subject area

In response to those fans seeking a new format/subject matter I figured I'd try out a more interesting area. Some fans think I'm not qualified to review movies (which I'm not, I obviously have a bad taste in entertainment generally: movies, tv shows, music, etc.) This isn't late breaking news to anyone who reads the blog.

Instead of reviewing movies, I'm going to tell you what I had to eat today. For lunch today I had some eggs and oranges. And a vitamin water zero. I've attached a picture of it for you all to enjoy.

Now before anyone gets bored and quits reading this I should explain the purpose of the blog. I'm showing you my gross looking lunch so you all check my blog everyday.

It's known as the Hawthorne Effect. The theory is if anyone actually cares enough to look at phone pics of my breakfast everyday that they will pressure me to keep taking pictures of scrambled eggs and vitamin waters. Theoretically, if I quit posting pictures of eggs everyday, it will cause uproar throughout the blogosphere and I will be pressured into taking more pictures of the shit I eat for the blog world's enjoyment.

Now I know what you're thinking. "Buffalo, your movie taste is mediocre but this just seems crazy!"

Before you jump ship, I should tell you my approach to blogging is endorsed by Tim Ferriss, a blogger with a degree in East Asian Studies. Although his work has been frowned upon by "experts" (people licensed to practice medicine), I'm pretty sure this should make people want to check out my blog lol.

Actually as I'm writing this I'm getting bored already. Not as bored as I was during Annie Hall, but I think I'll be okay giving D+'s to those turd Academy Award nominees.

Happy 1 Year Anniversary!

Whats good blog world, special shout out to the website today for its one year anniversary. Some reflections on its first year..

1) It's came a long way from the first few posts. I still think I'll stick with the numbering system (obvi) but I'm glad it's evolved.

2) Some interesting stats for the fans

a) October 2010 was still the highest month for hits on the blog in 1 month, although I now get more hits per post then ever. September 2011 has its highest month of views per post than any other one.

b) The top 5 most visited pages are 1) Top 10 Movie Scenes #2: 8 Mile Rap Battle , 2) Inception, 3) 8 Mile, 4) The King's Speech, and 5) Piranha 3D (smdh). Also interesting to note that the top post has almost 4 times as many views as any other post on the website.

c) Google recently surpassed twitter as being the number 1 referring site.

3) I like the grading guidelines, although they're not always wildly accurate.

4) I'm a little stumped what to do this October. I have a general idea of watching some more of the old classic movies, following up on the bad sequels to a lot of the old hit movies, watching some of the favorite cult movies, and obvi revisiting some of the money ones closer to Halloween. Outside of October my general goal will be to stay away from straight-to-dvd movies and anything that Alan suggests lol.

Whats good BW? Few announcements tonight.

First, I've been working on this sick long blog post about how Michael Myers pops up in a who's who of horror (and nonhorror) movies. It's really tight but I've been having trouble putting the pictures in all the appropriate places on the blog so I just need to work out a few kinks there.

Second, just thought I should give you all a heads up (2 years late) about this sick song I've had on repeat all day. Give it a listen, it's no TSwift but it's still pretty quality stuff. It's by Ashley Gearing, it's called What Do You Think About Us and it's tight. Check it out here.

What's good blog world. As some of you might know already, I really don't like traveling, I really don't like big cities, and I really don't like Dallas.

Nonetheless, Me @lkcolt and @jordenwise are making moves down south this weekend to go to leg 2 of the Strikeforce Grandprix at that jitsu Cowboys stadium. Stay tuned for live updates starting @5:30 am as we take off. As much as I'm complaining about this, it should be a pretty tight weekend.
